Planning Low Voltage Early: What a General Contractor Should Hand an Integrator at Design Stage
Every conflict that shows up while cable is being pulled was actually a design stage decision nobody made in time.

By the time an integrator shows up to pull cable, most of the decisions that determine whether the job goes smoothly have already been made, or not made, at the design stage. A general contractor who brings low voltage into the conversation early, alongside electrical and mechanical rather than after them, avoids a specific set of conflicts that otherwise surface once walls are closed and the schedule has no slack left to absorb them.
Pathway sized for more than day one
Conduit, cable tray, innerduct and J hooks installed during rough in have to be sized for more than the systems specified on day one. Pathway and conduit sized for current load plus roughly 40 percent future capacity means the building can add cameras, access control points or a network upgrade later without opening a finished ceiling to run new pathway. Pathway sized exactly to the day one cable count looks efficient on a materials estimate and becomes the reason a tenant fit out two years later costs more than it should.
Equipment rooms planned in, not found later
Every low voltage system needs somewhere to land, a main distribution frame and, in a larger building, intermediate distribution frames on each floor or wing. These rooms need ventilation, because switching and recording equipment generates heat, proper grounding, and enough physical space for cable management, not a repurposed closet discovered after the fact because nobody put an MDF on the drawings. An integrator engineering the system before cable is pulled needs these rooms identified at design stage, not assigned during a walkthrough after framing is done.
Door hardware schedules, not just door schedules
Access control depends on electric strikes, magnetic locks and electrified hardware being coordinated with the architectural door schedule from the start. A door specified with standard mechanical hardware that later needs an electric strike for access control is a change order, a fire rating question and sometimes a different door altogether. Handing the integrator the door hardware schedule, not just the door schedule, at design stage is what lets access control get engineered alongside the doors instead of retrofitted onto them.
A single point of contact keeps decisions from stalling
Design stage questions have a way of sitting unanswered for weeks when they have to route through several people before someone can actually decide. Does this closet become the IDF or does it stay storage. Does this door get an electric strike or stay mechanical. Small questions like these determine real construction sequencing, and a GC who names one person able to make that call at design stage prevents them from turning into schedule risk once cable is being pulled and the answer is needed the same day, not the same month.
One set of building plans, reviewed once
